Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pounds sweet potatoes (about 5–6 medium), Garnet or Jewel varieties
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed (for topping)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed (for topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (for topping)
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup (optional)
  • 1/4 cup mini marshmallows (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Scrub sweet potatoes, pierce with a fork, and roast on a baking sheet for 45-60 minutes until fork-tender. Let cool 15 minutes, then peel.
  2. In a large bowl, mash peeled sweet potatoes until smooth. Add softened butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, eggs, milk, vanilla, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Mix until creamy.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine chopped pecans, flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cut in cold cubed butter with a pastry cutter or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Spread sweet potato mixture evenly. Sprinkle pecan crumble topping over the top. If making ahead, cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
  5. If baking from cold, let casserole sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes until topping is golden and filling is bubbly. If topping browns too quickly, tent with foil.
  6. Optional: Add marshmallows during the last 5 minutes of baking. Let casserole rest 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Roast sweet potatoes instead of boiling for richer flavor. Use room temperature eggs to avoid lumpy mixture. Don’t overmix the crumble; leave pea-sized butter pieces for a flaky topping. Let casserole rest 10 minutes after baking. For make-ahead, assemble completely and refrigerate up to 3 days; add 10-15 minutes to baking time if starting cold. Freezes well for up to 3 months.
