Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups (320 g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (75 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 ½ cups (300 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • Orange food coloring (optional, a few drops)
  • For the orange frosting:
  • ½ cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups (240 g) powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons (3045 ml) milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and cream cheese together using an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Gradually beat in the granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  5. Add the egg and vanilla extract; mix until combined.
  6. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet, mixing on low speed or folding with a spatula until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  7. Optional: Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes to firm up.
  8. Use a cookie scoop or tablespoon to drop rounded balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart. Makes approximately 24 cookies.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes until cookies look set but still soft in the center. Avoid overbaking.
  10. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
  11. To prepare frosting: Beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with milk or cream. Stir in vanilla extract, orange food coloring, and orange zest if using until smooth and vibrant.
  12. Once cookies are completely cool, spread a generous layer of orange frosting on each using an offset spatula or butter knife. Decorate as desired.

Notes

Chilling the dough is optional but recommended to prevent spreading. Watch baking time closely to keep cookies soft and moist. Frost only when cookies are completely cool to avoid melting. Dough can be frozen for later baking.
