Quick and easy apple dumplings made with crescent roll dough and a light caramel sauce. Perfect for last-minute desserts, holiday dinners, or weeknight treats.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples, peeled and cored (Honeycrisp or Fuji recommended)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar (optional, for topping)
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Peel both apples completely. Using a corer or small knife, remove the core from the top, leaving the bottom intact. Cut each apple in half horizontally to get four round halves.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until it forms a paste.
  4. Open the can of crescent dough and separate it into 4 rectangles, pressing the perforated seams together. Roll each rectangle to about 1/8 inch thick.
  5. Place one apple half, cut-side up, in the center of each dough rectangle. Spoon about a teaspoon of the cinnamon butter mixture into the hollowed center. Bring the corners of the dough up and over the apple, pinching the seams to seal. Place seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Brush the tops of the dumplings with any remaining melted butter from the cinnamon mixture. Sprinkle with turbinado sugar if using.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender. Let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
  8. While the dumplings bake, make the caramel sauce: Combine the butter and brown sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves, about 2-3 minutes. Slowly whisk in the heavy cream and Greek yogurt. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and a pinch of sea salt.
  9. Serve warm: Place a dumpling on a plate, drizzle generously with caramel sauce, and add a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

Don’t overwork the dough. Choose apples that hold their shape like Honeycrisp or Fuji. Watch the caramel carefully to avoid burning. Let dumplings rest 5 minutes after baking. Make caramel sauce while dumplings bake for best results.
