A fast and flavorful skillet meal featuring juicy chicken cooked in smoky barbecue sauce, ready in just 20 minutes. Perfect for busy weeknights and casual dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (e.g., Sweet Baby Ray’s)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons water or chicken broth
  • Optional: chopped parsley or cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Pat chicken dry with paper towels. Season both sides with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Heat skillet over medium-high heat and add olive oil. Heat until shimmering, about 1-2 minutes.
  3. Add chicken in a single layer. Cook without moving for 4-5 minutes until golden brown on the bottom. Flip and cook the other side for 4 minutes.
  4. Lower heat to medium. Pour barbecue sauce over chicken and add water or chicken broth. Stir gently to coat chicken evenly.
  5. Cover skillet loosely with lid or foil. Simmer for 5-6 minutes until chicken is cooked through (internal temperature 165°F). Sauce will thicken.
  6. Remove lid, increase heat slightly, and cook 1-2 more minutes to reduce sauce to a sticky glaze. Sprinkle with chopped herbs if desired.
  7. Serve immediately with sides like mashed potatoes, grilled veggies, or salad.

Notes

Do not crowd the skillet to ensure proper searing. Pat chicken dry before seasoning to get a golden crust. If barbecue sauce is very sweet, add a splash of apple cider vinegar to balance flavors. Let chicken release naturally if it sticks to the pan. Use medium to medium-high heat for best caramelization.
