A fast, flavorful, and easy homemade dinner featuring tender beef and crisp broccoli in a savory sauce, ready in just 15 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz (340 g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 4 cups (about 300 g) fresh broccoli florets, washed and dried
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water or beef broth
  • Optional: sesame seeds for garnish
  • Optional: sliced green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Slice the beef thinly against the grain into strips about 1/4 inch thick and set aside.
  2. Wash and cut broccoli into bite-sized florets and pat dry thoroughly.
  3. In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, and grated ginger; mix well until sugar dissolves.
  4. Toss the sliced beef in half of the sauce mixture and let marinate for 5 minutes.
  5. Mix cornstarch with water to create a slurry and set aside.
  6. Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Stir-fry broccoli for 3-4 minutes until bright green and crisp-tender. Remove and set aside.
  7. Add remaining 1 tablespoon oil to the pan. Add marinated beef strips in a single layer and sear for 1-2 minutes per side until browned but still juicy. Cook in batches if necessary.
  8. Pour remaining sauce mixture and water or beef broth into the pan with beef. Stir to combine, then return broccoli to the pan and stir everything together.
  9. Slowly pour in the cornstarch slurry while stirring. Cook for 1-2 minutes until sauce thickens and coats the beef and broccoli.
  10. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Garnish with sesame seeds or sliced green onions if desired.

Notes

Slice beef against the grain for tenderness. Do not overcrowd the pan to ensure proper searing. Pat broccoli dry to avoid sogginess. Add cornstarch slurry slowly to avoid lumps. For gluten-free, use tamari and gluten-free oyster sauce. Variations include swapping beef for chicken or tofu, adding chili garlic sauce for heat, or extra vegetables for color and crunch.
