  • 1/4 cup (60ml) soy sauce (low sodium recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 stalks green onions, sliced thin
  • 4 cups (960ml) cooked jasmine rice
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Cook 4 cups (960ml) of jasmine rice according to package instructions, about 15-20 minutes. Fluff with a fork and keep warm.
  2. While rice cooks, mince garlic, grate ginger, and slice green onions separating white and green parts.
  3. Heat a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and break into bite-sized pieces. Cook 5-7 minutes until no longer pink and starting to brown. Drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Lower heat to medium. Stir in minced garlic, grated ginger, and white parts of green onions. Cook 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, toasted sesame oil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Pour over beef and stir to coat evenly.
  6. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until sauce thickens and clings to beef. Add a tablespoon of water if sauce is too thick.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Stir in green parts of green onions and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.
  8. Spoon warm jasmine rice into bowls and top with the Korean beef mixture. Serve immediately.
