A fast and flavorful Korean-inspired ground beef bowl ready in just 15 minutes, perfect for busy weeknights or quick dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef (85% lean)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 stalks green onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups (about 900g) cooked white rice (steamed jasmine or short grain)
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook about 4 cups (900g) of white rice according to package instructions (about 15-20 minutes).
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and break into small crumbles. Cook for 5-6 minutes until no longer pink.
  3. Drain excess fat if desired, leaving a bit for flavor.
  4. Stir in minced garlic and grated ginger. Cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn.
  5. In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes if using. Pour over the beef.
  6. Stir well to coat beef evenly and let simmer for 2-3 minutes until sauce thickens slightly.
  7. Add sliced green onions and toss to mix. Remove from heat.
  8. Spoon cooked rice into bowls, top with the beef mixture, and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the pan to ensure proper browning. Use fresh garlic and ginger for best flavor. Adjust sweetness and saltiness to taste. Let sauce simmer briefly to thicken. For gluten-free, substitute soy sauce with tamari. Ground turkey or chicken can replace beef. Add gochujang for spicier flavor. Serve with optional garnishes like green onions and sesame seeds.
